Sensor solutions for EV charging points
Electric vehicle (EV) charging points are essential infrastructure for the growing adoption of electric cars. These stations provide various charging options, from fast chargers for quick top-ups to slower chargers designed for overnight use. Ensuring these charging points’ safe, efficient and reliable operation is essential for delivering a seamless user experience and supporting the shift towards cleaner energy.
The technology behind EV charging points is complex, incorporating advanced electronics, communication protocols and energy management systems. Within each station, sensors and switches work to ensure the charging process operates smoothly and safely. The Variohm Group portfolio includes several sensing solutions that address different aspects of EV charging applications, enhancing functionality and safety.
Waterproof ball switches from CPI
Waterproof ball switches are integral to the functionality of EV charging stations. These detect whether the charging nozzle is correctly positioned back in its station. When the nozzle is properly inserted, the ball switch activates the charging process, ensuring a secure connection. If it is not correctly connected or removed, the ball switch can immediately stop the charging process to prevent any electrical faults. The waterproof feature of these switches ensures their reliability in various environmental conditions, protecting them from water damage and ensuring consistent performance in outdoor installations.
Onmidirectional tilt switch from Magnasphere
To enhance safety and reliability by detecting and responding to changes in the orientation of a charging station or its components, tilt switches are essential. They can identify when the station is tilted or shifted from its intended position, which might occur due to accidental impacts, tampering or incorrect installation. When a tilt is detected, the switch can trigger an alert or automatically shut down the charging process to prevent damage or potential electrical hazards.
Temperature probe from Eurosensor
Temperature management is a critical aspect of fast charging due to the significant heat generated by high power levels. Temperature probes are mounted inside the charging nozzle on the metal parts that carry the electrical current, continuously monitoring the temperature of the connectors. If excessive heat is detected, the probe can trigger cooling mechanisms to dissipate the heat or, when temperatures exceed safe limits, can activate a system shutdown to prevent overheating and potential fire hazards. By maintaining optimal thermal conditions, temperature probes help ensure the charging process remains efficient and safe, protecting both the charging equipment and the electric vehicle.
Incorporating sensor technologies into EV charging points is vital for their safe and efficient operation. Together, the solutions offered by Variohm Group contribute to a robust and dependable EV charging infrastructure.
